Growing Community: Port of Africatown Hosts Fall Gardening Workshop

On Saturday, September 26, the Black Wolf Event Hall in Prichard, Alabama, was full of neighbors ready to learn, grow, and get their hands a little closer to the earth.

Port of Africatown hosted a free Intro to Gardening Class, welcoming a full house of both first-time and seasoned gardeners interested in preparing their gardens for the fall season.

The workshop was led by India Bryant and co-led by Barja Wilson, who shared practical gardening knowledge, tips, and techniques that participants could take home and put to use right away. From understanding what grows well during the fall to learning how to care for plants and build healthier gardens, the gathering created space for people to learn from our instructors and from one another.

But this workshop was about more than gardening.

Growing food, caring for the land, and sharing knowledge are all part of building healthier and more resilient communities. When people have the tools to grow something for themselves, they are also strengthening our collective relationship to the land, to food, and to each other.

The workshop was made possible through support from the Gulf Coast Environmental Engagement Center (GCEEC), whose work promotes environmental education, engagement, and community building throughout the Gulf Coast.

We are grateful to everyone who came out, asked questions, shared their experiences, and helped make the room feel like community. At Port of Africatown, we believe that caring for our environment begins close to home - in our neighborhoods, our gardens, and the spaces we share. And sometimes, building something bigger starts with something as small as a seed.

We look forward to growing with you at the next workshop. 🌱💚
