Restoring the Africatown Region: A 3-Year Environmental Education Project

The Port of Africatown is leading a $250,000, three-year initiative (2025–2028) to restore and revitalize the Africatown Region, focusing on the historic communities of Prichard and Plateau, Alabama. These neighborhoods face ongoing challenges from industrial pollution, health risks, and limited access to green spaces.

T-Mobile Beautification Award

The Port of Africatown has been awarded a one year, $50,000 grant award (2025)- By adding shade trees and other greenery we aim to create an environmentally pleasing and friendly atmosphere in the Center City area of Prichard, for the purposes of attracting more families to the downtown social and shopping area and supporting businesses in the corridor.

PROGRAM Vision: Beautification

 We are committed to strengthening Africatown through environmental education, community action, and green job creation—empowering residents while advancing sustainability and environmental justice.

    • Develop and launch environmental education programs in schools and youth clubs

    • Create community gardens and expand green spaces

    • Provide sustainability and environmental justice training

    • Lead recycling drives, clean-ups, and conservation workshops

    • Inspire environmental stewardship and local advocacy

    • Year 1: Environmental curriculum, after-school programs, workshops, and community needs assessments

    • Year 2: Community gardens, hands-on green projects, and green job skills training

    • Year 3: Advanced sustainability workshops, leadership training, and long-term program handover

    • Improved community health through pollution reduction and waste management

    • New gardens and tree plantings increasing food access and clean air

    • Over 200 youth engaged in environmental camps and clubs

    • 30% reduction in waste through the Mobile Recycling Initiative

    • Stronger community leadership in environmental advocacy

This project ensures that 100% of benefits remain in Africatown’s communities of Prichard and Plateau. It promotes environmental equity in historically disadvantaged areas and aligns with the federal Justice40 Initiative.
